Book of the month – December 2015

Dec 10, 2015 | Tony Byrne's View

This month’s book is Leading by Sir Alex Ferguson and Sir Michael Moritz. For those of you who don’t know, Sir Alex Ferguson was until a few years ago the very successful manager of Manchester United football club.

The book is less about football and more about leadership, and this is why the book spoke to me. While it is a little long and takes some time to read, it does clearly set out Ferguson’s views on leadership and what is important. There are a few contradictions, but I think this is more to do with the way in which the book was written (through interviews) than any purposeful strategy.

If you lead any group of people, whether they are employees, a committee at the golf club, the village association or a group of friends on holiday, the book has much to offer and sets out real life (football) examples that bring the concepts together. If you have a football fan in your life, this might be a book for their Christmas stocking.
